A Healthy Step Forward | CDI’s Kilp and Nemoir Certified as WELL APs

Corporate Design Interiors (CDI) is thrilled to congratulate Jen Kilp, Director of Design, and Heather Nemoir, General Manager and Partner, who recently became WELL Accredited Professionals (WELL AP). The credential is earned through the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™) and signifies advanced knowledge of health and wellness in the built environment and specialization in the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL). Kilp and Nemoir are the first CDI team members to earn WELL AP certification and together they join a global community of leading professionals dedicated to supporting human health and well-being within the places where we live, work and play. For those of you that are unfamiliar with WELL program or what makes WELL AP certification beneficial for our organization and clients, let’s take a closer look at why working with a team of accredited professionals is so important.

What is WELL?

The International WELL Building Institute™  (IWBI) was founded with the goal of transforming today’s buildings and communities in ways that help people live and work at their very best. Launched in October 2014 after six years of research and development, IBWI delivered the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL), the leading tool for advancing health and well-being in buildings globally. The Standard provides a flexible framework for interior spaces and communities looking to improve health and human experience through the built environment, partnering design strategies with improvements to ongoing operational and policy protocols. The WELL Building Standard handbook encourages more buildings to be built “to support human health, well-being and comfort” and to “encourage healthy, more active lifestyles and reducing occupant exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants.” Regardless of the type of building that is WELL certified or where it is located around the world, they all boast a commitment to helping improve health and well-being simply by living and working in them.

The WELL Building Standard v1 covers seven core components — air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind — which you can dive into on the CDI blog. The WELL v2™ pilot is also available for exploration. WELL v2 consolidates previous iterations and pilots into one WELL for all project types and outlines ten components – air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community. Explore the new pilot of the WELL Building Standard by following the link above.

As part of its corporate renovation, Kimball Corporate Headquarters has registered to become WELL certified. Over 3,500 projects encompassing over 435 million square feet are applying WELL across 55 countries today. Follow the link to explore more WELL projects and keep an eye out for the reveal of Kimball’s new space in the coming weeks.

The Value of WELL Accreditation

We spend about 90% of our time indoors, and our physical environment impacts our health more than lifestyle, medical care and genetics. For companies, an investment in employee physical and mental health provides ongoing returns. Over 90% of corporate expenses are tied to salary and benefits, which means the ROI of healthier and happier employees extends to cost-savings. A 2013 study found that 87% of 10,000 employees surveyed considered health and wellness benefits a significant factor when choosing an employer, solidifying the fact that workplace well-being is not only critical to cost-savings, it is critical to attracting and retaining a talented workforce.

In order to achieve accreditation, individuals must successfully pass the WELL AP exam, an assessment based on the expertise of leading practitioners in the field of design, health and wellness. As previously noted, the WELL AP credential signifies advanced knowledge of health and well-being in the built environment and specialization in the principles, practices and applications of the WELL Building Standard. Once accredited, each WELL AP becomes an advocate for human-centric design, leads WELL Certification efforts, aligns each project with health goals and begins to transform company culture.

Corporate Design Interiors wants to help lead the way in demonstrating how designing for the employee experience with well-being top of mind, can positively impact human lives. Providing expert knowledge in furnishings, finishes and other design elements and services (i.e. ergonomic evaluations) within commercial interior environments, CDI continues to be an advocate of WELL initiatives for our clients and support for our design and industry partners working toward WELL certification. We hope our efforts will inspire our industry to continue to innovate for a healthier and more sustainable future.
